What is the difference between a psychologist and a psychiatrist?

A psychologist provides counseling, psychological evaluations, and psychological testing. Psychologists do not prescribe medications. Psychiatrists may prescribe medications, conduct psychiatric evaluations, and provide routine medication management. Some psychiatrists may also provide counseling services.

I never had any kind of counseling before. What can I expect when I come in?

The first session is primarily a history gathering session so that your provider can understand your problems, issues, and concerns. By the end of that first session, treatment recommendations and/or goals are identified.
